NT2 exam & inburgering preparation

What is the NT2 exam?

The Staatsexamen Nederlands als tweede taal (NT2) is the official Dutch-as-a-second-language exam. It has two programmes — I (level B1), for vocational training and most practical jobs, and II (level B2), for university and higher-skilled roles — and four independent skills: reading, listening, writing and speaking.

What is inburgering?

Inburgering is the mandatory civic integration process for certain residence permits (mainly asylum and family migration). Since 2022 your gemeente (municipality) guides you through a personal plan (PIP), covering Dutch (usually to B1), the KNM module (knowledge of Dutch society) and labour-market orientation (MAP).

How do the preparation lessons work?

First we bring your Dutch to the level the exam requires. In parallel we drill the exam format itself — timing, question types, and for the speaking test, the pace of recorded answers, which is where many candidates lose points.

How far in advance should I start?

It depends on your current level and your DUO deadline. Starting from scratch, budget 1–2 years to reach B1; with an existing base, a few months of focused preparation is often enough. Get in touch for an assessment of your starting point.
